Turn off your lights and save the world – Earth Hour 2008

Ceiling Fan

I was lying in bed with nothing much to do. It was a hot day and the ceiling fan was turned on. The only light in the room was from the light under the fan.

I was fascinated with the movement of the fan breaking up the shadows around the room as it moved. I thought it was beautiful and I think we take technology for granted. Lots of countries use natural energy like it is in limitless quantities. We are surrounded by the latest gadgets and getting overfed with junk food that makes us unhealthy. Aren’t we seeing more and more people who are obese around us or even we ourselves are getting fatter too.

All of these is created to appease the overwhelming demand from all of us and all of these consume great amounts of energy. I know it is hard to imagine what can one person do. Well one way would be to try and reduce our wastage of resources by using less. Take showers instead of baths… switch off the gas cooker a few minutes before finishing cooking the pan is still hot enough to cook without the flames right?

If it is not too hot in your car and not too much pollution open the window and not just the air conditioning all the time.

Same goes for the house… would opening the door with the metal grill doors still closed for safety bring in the breeze and cool the house without using so much electricity?

I continue to glance up at the fan and with the camera handy.. always carry one with you at all times to catch every opportunity… I know even if I am in bed it is a little extreme to be having a camera close by but hey you never know.

Anyway, I took a few shots and tried to capture the warmth of the light and also the movement from the fan going in circles. After a few shots, I decided to turn it off and open a window to save power. I did my part even though it is insignificant but if all of us were to do it then maybe we can all make it more significant and help the world.

There is a worldwide event that will happen on March 29, 2008. It is called Earth Hour where the whole world will turn off their lights for just one hour at 8pm to 9pm. Be a part of this and save some money for yourself in the process. How much difference would switching off the lights for one hour do… not much really but it’s a start right? Keep thinking of other ways to do your part.

I signed up to participate so join me. Register and login to this event at www.earthhour.org do your part in helping the world care more about the planet we all love. :-)
